This collection contains records of men eligible for the Union Army draft during the U.S. Civil War, based on the 1863 Enrollment Act, also called the Civil War Military Draft Act. Records typically include names, age, marital status, place of birth, residence and registration details.<br><br>The law required U.S. male citizens and immigrants who had applied for citizenship between ages 20 and 45 to enroll, with exemptions for men who were impaired, sole providers, or widowers with dependents. The draft divided eligible men into three classes based on age and marital status.
