Yes, it is possible to merge two GEDCOM files together.

To do this, go to Family Tree Builder and import the first GEDCOM file (or open your existing family tree project if this is your basis for the merge).

Then import the second GEDCOM file, using the ‘File>Import GEDCOM or genealogy file’ option in Family Tree Builder.

A wizard will open, asking you to select the GEDCOM you wish to import.

After you click on ‘Next’, the configuration page will come up:

In the ‘Configuration’ page in this wizard, there is an ‘Output’ section, which gives you an option to merge the new GEDCOM file into the previous project. Choose the Merge option and complete the wizard.

*You will be asked to close the project which is currently open. Click yes. This is a normal part of the process of merging two GEDCOM files.

Please note, what this merge process actually does is to put both family trees in the same project. It doesn’t create connection between people in the different trees. To create connections between people in the trees, please see this FAQ post:

If there are similar people in the two GEDCOM files, they will remain duplicates and will not be consolidated, you will need to delete the duplicates manually.

Because of this, we don’t recommend using the merge feature if the family trees are very similar and include many of the same people. If this is the case with your family trees, you should open the most updated tree and manually add the missing records from the second tree.

In addition, photos in the tree will not be transferred. Any photos in the GEDCOM file you merged into your main tree will have to be replaced manually.
